The poetry of W. B. Yeats

A 4-week course designed and delivered by Woody River

Start date: Wednesday 21 October, 7-9pm

Over 150 years since the birth of William Butler Yeats, his poetry continues to have an enduring place in the landscape of world literature, inspiring writers, musicians and artists alike. This day course explores four of his finest poems written at different stages in his life. We will examine how he sought inspiration from Irish mythology, politics, nature, his personal relationships and art to develop ideas about beauty and creativity.

Week 1
Irish mythology and the poetry of nature
'The Song of Wandering Aengus' (1897)

Week 2
Irish nationalism and the poetry of passion
'Easter 1916' (1916)

Week 3
A visionary journey: mortality and the spirit
 'Sailing to Byzantium' (1927)

Week 4
Reflections in old age: the nature of creativity
Long-legged Fly (1939)

This course will be run online via Zoom with each session lasting 1.5 hours, allowing for a short break mid-way through. Zoom has many features which will enable us to mimic the physical classroom environment in the safest possible way during these extraordinary times; presentations and videos can be shown, there is a chat feature and there are breakout rooms which enable small group discussions.

The 4-week W. B. Yeats course will be £40. Students can contact me to arrange paying by bank transfer, and can either have digital or paper booklets (digital are free; paper are charged)

The course will also make use of the online learning platform 'Canvas' where course materials will be posted and forums will be set up for those wishing to continue their conversations about the texts after the sessions. Using the online learning platform enables the tutor to create a page for each sessions where more information and links can be posted for those wishing to pursue further reading in their own time or those wishing to review the content of previous sessions. If you have any questions or concerns about doing an online course and using Zoom and Canvas, please get in touch with Woody using the tutor contact form at the bottom of this page.
